Engaging Activities for People Living with Dementia

Keeping the mind active is just as important as caring for the body. If you support someone living with dementia, you might wonder what kinds of activities will help them feel included, valued, and stimulated. Here are seven simple, practical ideas that you can try at home or during a visit to Sapcote Memory Hub.

1. Music They Remember

Familiar songs often unlock long-lost memories. Play music from their youth or a favourite artist. Many people with dementia respond with singing, toe-tapping or even dancing. Bring along CDs or create a playlist on your phone. We use music regularly at the Hub because it sparks smiles and stories.

2. Picture Sharing

Old photos can open the door to meaningful conversation. Ask gentle questions like, “Who’s this?” or “What were you doing here?” You can even create a photo book or memory box together. It’s a great way to reconnect with their sense of identity.

3. Simple Art or Colouring

No need to be an artist. Painting, colouring, or making simple collages can bring joy and a sense of calm. Focus on the process, not the result. We provide regular craft sessions where everyone can join in, no matter their ability.

4. Gentle Movement

Walking in the garden, chair exercises, or a light stretch can help with circulation, balance, and mood. Physical activity doesn’t need to be tiring, it just needs to feel good. We keep things easy and safe during our movement and dance sessions.

5. Puzzles and Sorting Games

Large-piece jigsaws, shape sorters, or even sorting buttons by colour can keep the brain engaged. Start with easier tasks and work together if needed. Activities like these support focus and coordination.

6. Gardening Together

Digging, watering, or planting seeds can bring a sense of purpose. Being outdoors often lifts spirits. At Sapcote Memory Hub, our garden is a place to connect with nature, and with others.

7. Bake or Prepare Food

Measuring, stirring, or decorating cupcakes gives people a hands-on role. The smells and tastes can bring back happy memories. Keep things simple and safe, and most of all, have fun with it.

Activities are more powerful when they’re shared. That’s what we’re all about at Sapcote Memory Hub. We run regular sessions for people with dementia and their carers, with trained staff, a warm atmosphere, and plenty of time to talk and connect.
